Celebrating 35 Years of Caring!    1972-2007

History of Our Organization

Diamond State Youth was started in 1972 under the direction of the Board of Directors of Diamond State Youth, Inc., a non-profit organization.  Russell Fiske was the founder and Executive Director.  His focus was to work with at-risk youth with the goal of turning their lives around to become productive citizens.  The population was comprised of children who were abused and neglected as well as exhibiting other problems such as hyperactivity, fetal alcohol syndrome, mental health issues and adolescent authority problems.

In 1990, Mr. Fiske received and accepted a proposal for a contract to handle what is now known as the Non-Secure Detention program.  The Non-Secure Detention youth are children that reside at our facility until it is time for them to go to court.  These children would normally have been sent to New Castle County Detention Center therefore being exposed to more hardened offenders.  We help these children rebuild their self-esteem and pride and have been very successful in assisting children that have not been successful elsewhere.  Our philosophy has always been to give a child a second chance to overcome their difficulties and assist them in making better decisions for themselves.

Who We Are Today...

In April 2007, Camelot Home for Boys was rededicated in honor of our late founder Russell Fiske.  The facility was renamed Fiske Academy at Camelot.  Jon Fiske, Russell's son, is our Director of Operations.  Ana Pascual is our Director of Contractual Services.

The children we care for are placed with us via Family Court, Magistrate Court, Youth Rehabilitative Services and Division of Family Services.  The youth are between the ages of 10 to 18 years of age and will reside here until they are able to return home to their families or find a foster home.  A child's stay at Fiske Academy can be as little as 24 hours or as long as a year.

During a child's stay with us, we are responsible for every aspect of the child's life which includes transporation to school, court appointments, medical appointments and all care.  In 2007 we began participating in the National School Lunch and School Breakfast program in accordance with U.S. Department of Agriculture policy.

To accommodate the ever changing needs of the children, we recently have contracted to have an on-site certified teacher and an on-site visiting nurse.  Our on-site teacher provides education to those children who are unable to attend their regular public, private or alternative school.  Our on-site nurse provides health screenings as well as supervises the medication log.  By providing these two services, Fiske Academy is at the forefront when it comes to providing thorough care for these children in need.

We are uncertain what the future holds for our organization, but when faced with hurdles we will give all we have to clear them and move forward so that we can continue this most needed service for Delaware's children.
